It was Spring, 2021. I had just finished my seasonal tour in nuclear maintenance. That's been my regular career since I can remember. Now it was Summertime with all the time in the world to spend with my daughter. It's the best time of the year for me.
I had a random burl cookie laying around that I had found on a camping trip. Epoxy and live edge wood had always fascinated me. I watched videos in my spare time, amazed at what I'd see people create and thought "maybe that's something I can do". But didn't have any of the tools or the skillset. At the time I had ZERO background in carpentry or custom decor. The most I've done was make a coffee table out of pallet wood and black iron pipe. And a coat rack out of a small slab of wood and some cut off railroad spikes. I still have both of those even today.
So... with zero woodworking skills and barely any know-how or knowledge on exactly how to do a Live Edge epoxy project, I went to the local hardware store and bought a few tools that I needed. They were the basics. A table saw, a router, an orbital sander and a few other things. I bought melamine and Tyvek tape because that's how molds were made. The table saw terrified me. And I needed to cut this cookie in half to create my river shape. I stopped at a local craft store unique to Pittsburgh and got some cheap epoxy because I had zero connections in the game nor did I even know what was good and what wasn't. I even picked up some off-the-shelf Pigment. Time to wing it.
What I ended up creating amazes me even to this day. Now, that's not to say mistakes weren't made. I learned ALOT of lessons with this. Just as anyone would their first time out. But I loved it. I loved the process. I loved the feeling that I was making something from my own head. I loved the peace it brought me. I was proud.
At this point, Woodland Revivals was born. I came up with the name because I was essentially taking wood from a fallen tree and turning it into something that you can use for years to come. Bringing families together at a dining room table. Having a centerpiece in your living room in the form of a coffee table. Or a clock. Or even something as simple as a coaster set or serving board.
